Esposito's Sovereignty and Immunity

Esposito examines the link between sovereignty and immunity in Hobbes' social contract theory and highlights the problems with the modern sovereignty's immunity paradigm. Hobbes believed that modern sovereignty aims to completely exclude outsiders and guarantee internal safety, similar to the concept of biological immunity. Therefore, Esposito views sovereignty as a kind of immune system. He criticizes this modern concept of sovereignty for functioning like an immune system, preserving only homogeneous life and excluding heterogeneous elements, thus controlling life.

To move beyond this modern immunity paradigm, Esposito focuses on the Latin word "munus," specifically its meaning of "donum," which refers to giving a gift without expecting anything in return. From this perspective, immunity involves opening oneself to the different, leading to a productive combination rather than preserving the self.
