■ 지멜의 예술론

Simmel's Theory of Art

Simmel sought to find the value of art in its relationship with life. He believed that true art should reveal the individual life of its subject rather than follow standardized forms. From this perspective, he positively evaluated Rembrandt's portraits, which strive to express the overall life of the person depicted. Simmel thought that by implementing personal laws, which are the will and ability to act according to one's subjective values and ideals, one could reveal individual life through art. He believed that a true artist is someone who conveys subjectivity through their own style, not an externally imposed one. Simmel argued that art should be appreciated as a whole, where the important aspect is how each element relates to and reveals meaning. His theory, which considered the interaction between life and art, provided an opportunity to reflect on life through art.
