개화기 과학 기술에 대한 지식인들의 생각

개화기 밀려 들어오는 서구 문명에 대해 조선은 쇄국 정책을 중심으로 대응하였다. 당시 위정척사론자의 대표적 인물인 이항로는 서구의 과학 기술이 기에 해당하는 현상에 천착하여 인욕을 충족시키는 것으로 흐를 위험이 있다고 판단하였다. 반면 박은식은 열강들이 약소국을 식민지화하는 정세를 목도하고 과학 기술의 중요성을 인식하여 이에 힘쓸 것을 주장하였다. 그러면서도 우리의 주체성을 잃어버리지 않기 위해 ‘양지’를 강조하였다. 양지를 통해 대인이 되면 인류 전체를 아우를 수 있는 대동 사회를 실현할 수 있다고 보았다.

Intellectuals' Views on Science and Technology during the Enlightenment Period

During the Enlightenment period, Korea responded to the influx of Western civilization primarily through a policy of isolation. Yi Hang-no, a representative figure of the Confucianist Isolationists, believed that Western science and technology were phenomena that could lead to the indulgence of human desires. On the other hand, Park Eun-sik, witnessing the colonization of weaker nations by powerful countries, recognized the importance of science and technology and advocated for its development. However, he also emphasized the importance of 'Yangji' (innate knowledge) to maintain our own identity. Park believed that by achieving 'Yangji' and becoming a great person, a grand society that embraces all humanity could be realized.
