Bakhtin's Chronotope and Theater

This article introduces Bakhtin's concept of the chronotope and explains how it is used to analyze theater. The chronotope is originally a concept used in novel analysis, referring to the special artistic effect created by the combination of time and space. While novels rely on language, theater expresses time and space visually and audibly through live performance. Therefore, the time and space in theater are divided into explicit, implicit, and psychological space-time, and the chronotope is applied differently than in novels. The explicit space-time presented in a play forms an implicit space-time, and the characters in the play create a psychological space-time. Additionally, various space-times within a single work can combine to form a chronotope, and the fictional space-time on stage and the real space-time of the audience can each form their own chronotopes, which then interact with each other.
