Compilation of Kim Bu-sik's 'Samguk Sagi'

'Samguk Sagi' is a historical book compiled on the recommendation of Kim Bu-sik and by the order of King Injong. The compilation of 'Samguk Sagi' can be understood in the context of both internal and external situations of Goryeo. Externally, the Song Dynasty in China had compiled the 'New Book of Tang' in a classical style, setting a precedent for 'Samguk Sagi' to be written in the same style. Internally, Goryeo was facing crises due to the rebellions of Yi Ja-gyeom and Myo Cheong, which threatened the Confucian-based political system. Kim Bu-sik, aiming to preserve the political system of Goryeo, compiled 'Samguk Sagi' based on Confucian historiography, which teaches lessons through history. Although 'Samguk Sagi' helped intellectuals of the time re-evaluate the history of the Three Kingdoms, some criticized it for lacking sufficient historical sources. As a result, other historical books were compiled to supplement or overcome the shortcomings of 'Samguk Sagi.'
