바이오 연료는 산소를 생산하고 대기 중 이산화 탄소를 흡수하면서 생산되는 바이오매스로 만든 연료라서 친환경적이다. 조류 중에서도 미세 조류는 오일의 생산성이 탁월하여 바이오 연료 생산에 많이 활용된다. 미세 조류에서 바이오 연료의 일종인 바이오디젤을 생산할 때에는 생산성이 좋은 균주를 선택하고, 에너지 공급 효율성을 고려하여 배양 방법을 선정하며, 배양액에 분산된 미세 조류를 효과적으로 모으기 위한 다양한 방법을 활용한다. 그리고 유기 용매를 사용하여 지질을 추출하고, 추출한 지질을 전이 에스테르화 반응을 통해 바이오디젤로 전환한다.

Microalgae and Biofuel

Biofuels are eco-friendly because they are made from biomass, which produces oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Among algae, microalgae are particularly useful for biofuel production due to their excellent oil productivity. To produce biodiesel, a type of biofuel, from microalgae, productive strains are selected. Cultivation methods are chosen based on energy efficiency, and various techniques are used to effectively collect dispersed microalgae from the culture medium. Lipids are then extracted using organic solvents, and these extracted lipids are converted into biodiesel through a process called transesterification.
